Obelisks obelisks!!

Whoa..after reading 7 Deadly Wonders, I am inspired to do a blog post on my favourite obelisks! Well what are obelisks? Ignorant me didnt know it till I went to Europe and tadaaa obelisks became our (or rather my) favourite spot-the-thing activity while sight seeing in Europe...

It all began in Paris (which was my first trip) when I wanted to see an obelisk badly in Place de la Concorde... I thought it was an amazing sculpture or some sort (according to shoe-string) and in the end it turned out to be just a column to me then... Then whenever we see such column-like thing, we will excitedly exclaim "Obelisks obelisks!!" and the guys will point at it from a distance and make a joke out of it..

Until I went to Rome, I didn't know obelisks originated from Egypt and those we saw in Paris and more in Rome were all shipped from Egypt!This explains why there are hieroglyphics on the obelisks! They are the ultimate symbol of sun worship of the sun god, Ra and were located outside temples in Egypt. Sigh.. earlier on pk told me it was a symbol knowledge..Bluff me!! There are also a pair of obelisks called Cleopatra's Needles located separately in London and New York.. Don't remember seeing them in London though..

And Rome is the ultimate capital of obelisks! It is said that Rome has more obelisks than in all around Egypt! And I went obelisk-hunting in Rome.. and so delightfully surprised to spot one in Istanbul in Hippodrome Square too!

Only the one in Istanbul had an inscription writing detailing the origins and name of the obelisk.. they should have this at ALL the obelisks so I can know!

But too bad I didn't manage to see the tallest obelisk in the world at Lateran (in Rome).. was so near but it was out of the way so I didn't have time to search for it..


How can I miss posing like an obelisk beside my favourite obelisks.. haha
